From feel-good treats and the hottest new scents, to quick treats to remedy every little summer beauty-dilemma, beauty editor Martinique Stevens reveals the way to a beautiful summer.
Wear a Touch of Blue
Brighten Up Your Eyes
Vibrant, but wearable blue eye-shadows look fresh and keep you modern right now. Use sparingly over the entire lid, otherwise the look becomes too 70’s retro for anyone over the age of 18.
w&h high summer fix: Prep eyelids with a great eye base, such as Bobbi Brown Eye Brightener, R380 for 6ml. Dab it over the lids and under the eyes to even out veins and dark circles, and keep eye make-up in place for longer in the heat.
Not in the mood to wear too much colour on your eyelids? Why not try one of the seasons’ latest make-up trends: graphic eyeliner. Take inspiration from this stunning and super easy-to-wear, StylebySA WBeauty Backstage ‘graphic liner’ eye look done by lead SA Fashion Week make-up artist, Lesley Whitby, a few weeks ago.

The best part? You don’t need to worry about having a steady hand with a liquid liner pen, because all you’ll need is this new and multi-use WBeauty Eyeshadow Palette, R230, some setting spray, R130 for 150ml and a small angled eyeshadow brush, like this NYX Professional Makeup Pro Brush Collection Angled Brush, R159,95.
Simply wet your brush by spraying the end with setting spray, dip it into a blue shade from your eyeshadow palette, and get lining. Done!
Paint your toes
New favourites include the ice-blue shade Morning Mantra from the Orly Breathable Treatment + Color collection, R175; peacock-teal shade Satin Sister by Essie, R140 will look great on paler skins; or denim-blue shade Feeling Swim-sical from the Morgan Taylor Summer 2018 collection, RRSP R150 which will look lovely on olive and deeper complexions.
Spritz on a Summer Floral
Summer is a great time to switch to lighter scents, and right now there are some truly exquisite scents out. Our beauty ed’s top three must-have scents for summer?
- Givenchy L’Interdit, R1 540 for 50ml EDP with its orange blossom, jasmin and vetiver notes is the embodiment of chic and sexy and is honestly one of her fave scents from those released this year- lively and well, simply intoxicating.
- Oscar de la Renta Bella Blanca, R1 167 for 50ml EDP features fresh and floral notes of freesia that seriously enchant thanks to base notes of creamy sandalwood.
- Elizabeth Arden My Fifth Avenue, R795 for 50ml EDP was surprisingly light and zesty with citrusy lemon and juicy mandarin amidst delicate musk base notes.
w&h budget summer fix: make your own cologne by mixing two drops each of lavender, lemon and rosemary pure essential oils diluted by blending with 100ml of mineral water. Remember: never use essential oils by themselves on your skin.
