Known for her fiery good looks, relentless energy and, of course, the Oscar she won for her role in Still Alice, the red-haired actress Julianne Moore is at the top of her game. She’s one of those rare actresses whose career has gained momentum past the age of 40. This year alone, she’s starred in three brilliant films, including Sebastián Lelio’s latest romantic drama Gloria Bell. And, she’s acting alongside Michelle Williams in After The Wedding, set to release in SA on 6 September.

But, when she’s not dazzling audiences with her on-screen performances, Julianne is living a quiet life at home in New York City with her husband Bart and their daughter Liv, who’s 17. Their son Caleb is at university. Julianne prides herself in being a mom and helping her kids with whatever they need. And, sometimes, that’s beauty advice.
Here’s the top-notch beauty advice she gives her teenage daughter…
What to do…
Julianne’s children definitely inherited their mom’s colouring, as the Instagram picture below shows. Because of their fair skin and delicate complexions, Julianne has always told her kids to wear lots of sunscreen, whether or not they’re spending loads of time outdoors. And, we couldn’t agree more. Julianne says, “Both my kids are very good with sunscreen in the summertime, but not so good in winter!” With the warmer weather already on the way, this is excellent advice to stick to.

What not to do…
According to Julianne, there’s just one more thing you absolutely have to keep in mind. The other excellent beauty advice she gives her daughter? “I always tell my daughter, ‘Don’t pluck your eyebrows!’ Hers are beautiful and I don’t want her to destroy them.” It’s something most women are guilty of, especially if you were experimenting with brow trends in the early ’90s. Skinny brows were fashionable back then, but who knew the tables would turn so drastically? We wish we’d followed the advice to leave those brows alone! But, there are still a few remedies for those of us with pencil-thin brows…
How to fix it…
There are loads of options at the moment if you’re interested in filling out those brows. Obviously, you could opt for products such as pencils, powders or liquids but, if you’re looking for a more permanent solution, here are some suggestions from our beauty editor:
- Brow tinting kits: Semi-permanent, granted, but there are several great tinting kits available. One tint lasts about two weeks. We love the Julienne Brow Tint Kit (R119,95), available at Dischem stores.
- Lash and brow booster kits: The RefectoCil Lash & Brow Booster is a serum that promises up to 56% longer lashes, plus broader, thicker and darker brows.
- Microblading: This is the tattooing technique loads of women, and celebs, swear by. Using a handheld tool, several tiny needles are used to add permanent pigment to the skin. Unaiza at UniqBrows is the go-to person for perfect brows. Call 084 786 0671 to find a salon near you.
