In an attempt to help young people stay in control of their screen time, TikTok is implementing a one-hour screen time limit for under-18s.
Along with this new feature, anyone between the ages of 13 and 18 will receive a weekly notification with a report of their screen time.
If the limit is reached, teens will have the option to enter a passcode to continue to use the app.
TikTok says the feature will be rolled out in the coming weeks.
People who discard the one-hour restriction will receive a prompt from TikTok after using the app for 100 minutes a day to encourage them to set their own screen time controls.
Parents using the Family Pairing option will also be able to access a breakdown of app usage and set a screen time limit for their kids.
Head of trust and safety at TikTok, Cormac Keenan, says the company worked with researchers to develop the new feature.
“While there’s no collectively endorsed position on the ‘right’ amount of screen time, or even the impact of screen time more broadly, we consulted the current academic research and experts from the Digital Wellness Lab at Boston Children’s Hospital in choosing this limit,” he says.
