Tina Turner is the recent addition to Mattel’s collection of reimagined trailblazing icons.
A barbie doll was created in her honour to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the song that dominated decades – ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It’ – capturing her essence in a black mini, denim jacket and of course, her iconic hair from the original music video.
Barbie Tina Turner is part of Mattel’s Barbie ‘Signature Music Series where it named her as the ‘Queen of Rock n’ Roll’. She joins other musicians honoured in the Barbie World; including Gloria Estefan and David Bowie.
Has Barbie become an award of its own?
Over the years, Barbie has made dolls from the likes of Beyoncé and Naomi Osaka. Far more than just a toy or symbol, the ‘award’ expresses the value of women and redefines role models.
Barbie has taken up so much space in the world of achievements that some social media users compared having a doll made in your honour to ‘getting an Oscar or Grammy’.
And, being ‘Barbiefied’ doesn’t simply extend to creatives.
Last year, Mattel created barbie dolls honouring women in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) which was a powerful showcasing of not only the people behind the scenes of life-saving endeavours, but women making historical moves.
