Trevor Noah, South Africa’s golden child of comedy, has certainly spread his wings in bringing laughter, insight and much-needed discussions not just to Mzansi, but the globe.
For the last seven years, Noah has been the voice and face of The Daily Show the popular American talkshow dubbed “one of the crown jewels of the Comedy central lineup.”
Even if you’ve never actually tuned into the Daily Show, you already know what’s gone down on the latest episode, as almost every taping tends to goes viral accompanied with an iconic Trevor Noah quote.
For locals, there’s always been something powerful about hearing a South African voice (and accent Noah’s managed to keep) navigate so many socio-political issues related to the world and the U.S (from #BlackLivesMatter to the pandemic).
However, Noah’s CBS tango is coming to an end as announced on Thursday evening.
Noah shared on the show’s latest episode that “after seven years, my time is up in the most beautiful way,” signalling the end of this chapter for the comedian.
He shared that it’s been one of his greatest joys, but after seven years its time.
When and why is Trevor Noah leaving the Daily Show?
Noah shared that he isn’t just dissapearing, before joking that if he owes anyone money he’ll pay them. As for his reasons, the king of comedy noted that after spending two years not on the road doing comedy, getting back out there again reminded him that “there’s another part of [his] life that [he] wants to carry on exploring.”
Comedy Central shared a statement explaining that Noah has a “demanding schedule” which the network had been trying to navigate for a long time.
Back on the road
The news also comes just after Noah announced that he’s coming back home to do shows in South Africa in 2023. Whether he’ll be moving back is another question hot on everyone’s speculations as all locals’ know there’ll never be a shortage of ‘what in South Africa is going on’ content.
