As we sit on the edge of our seats in anticipation of the Hunger Games prequel film, we’re even more excited to learn that Academy Award-winning sensation, Viola Davis, will star in the movie taking on a tenacious villain’s role.
Davis, who is the most Oscar-Nominated Black Actress in history, has made us laugh, cry and question society whenever she graces the silver screen. From The Help to Fences, Davis’ name attached to a project almost always means we’re in for a thought-provoking treat.
Taking her acting chops to the dystopian genre, Davis will step into the role of Dr Volumnia Gaul in The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

Under Francis Lawrence’s direction, the film will take us back to one of the most controversial ‘fantasy’ worlds in its infancy.
Following current popularity in the world of film, the story will reach back to a time before villains (like the infamous tyrant Coriolanus Snow) were actually villains.
As Deadline records, the journey back in time will show the tyrant Coriolanus Snow at the tender age of 18, set to capture an introspective vision of Suzanne Collins’ famous story.
The doc to played by Davis, is premised to be the head gamemaker of the 10th annual Hunger Games.
Of the character, Lawrence says:
“Dr. Gaul is as cruel as she is creative and as fearsome as she is formidable,” said Lawrence. “Snow’s savvy as a political operator develops in no small part due to his experiences with her as the games’ most commanding figure.”
We can look forward to seeing whose favour the odds are actually in, in November 2023.
And, if you’re itching to watch Davis on screen sooner, the highly-anticipated The Woman King is set to release next month!
