Cape Town’s beloved funny man, Wayne McKay brings his new solo show, AfriSnaaks to the Artscape this Summer!
The stand-up comedy show promises to tickle your funny bone while enticing the mind, which is evident at first glance, as the title of the show is a clever play on the word ‘Afrikaaps’, a local dialect of Afrikaans spoken on the Cape Flats. McKay delves into the delightful quirks – hence the ‘snaaks’ part in the name, which is translated to ‘funny’ in English – that come with growing up on the Cape Flats as he brings a mosaic of characters to life that paint a linguistically charged picture of South African society.
McKay is a seasoned entertainer with many years in the industry and with his multi-faceted career in comedy, acting, radio, television, and emceeing, he promises a rollercoaster exploration of the language of Afrikaans through his comedy show, AfriSnaaks, as it is experienced by those living in South Africa, and as seen through his razor-sharp, witty, and sometimes absurdly satirical comedic performance.
AfriSnaaks takes you on a journey through the idiosyncrasies of Afrikaans, showcasing the language’s playful nuances, colloquialisms, and absurdities that make it so uniquely humorous. “Audiences can look forward to experiencing, among other things, a bridging of the divides between Afrikaaps and Afrikaans on stage in a heart-warmingly humorous way that will have you laughing until you cry,” says the show’s award-winning director, Jeremeo Le Cordeur.
AfriSnaaks will show at the Artscape Innovation Lounge from 5 to 10 February 2024.
