Actress Uma Thurman has been surprisingly honest and open about the ups and downs in her love life. In an interview with Oprah back in 2005, shortly after her divorce from Gattaca star Ethan Hawke, she spoke about the trauma of the divorce and how it took her a long time before she could feel whole again. The couple has two children together, Maya, 21, and Levon Roan, 17.
Since then she’s had another beautiful daughter Luna, seven, with French financier Arpad Busson. But she split from him in 2014. These days, the actress is single and living in New York with her children.
And, even after going through so much heartbreak, Uma Thurman says she’s still a romantic at heart. This is what she has learnt from her relationships…

Keeping it together
You never want your children to know you’re having a hard time. They depend on you and they know they need you to survive. If you’re clearly beaten down, it makes them feel vulnerable because you’re vulnerable. Going through my divorce, I had to keep it together for them. They needed that sense of security. It took me several years to recover from my divorce, but I’ve found a good rhythm to life now.
I’ve learnt that I can look after myself. I’ve become more disciplined out of necessity. Looking after three kids is a huge responsibility, and it can be difficult at times to manage your career and still be the mother you want to be. Maybe it can feel lonely sometimes, but you become stronger for it.

Life today
I’m trying to have a very peaceful personal life. I’m happier now than I’ve ever been and I feel much less jaded than I used to. I spent so many years conflicted over who I am and what I want out of life, but I’m trying to be more free and receptive. I’m learning to embrace change. In some ways, I think my blind faith that everything would fall into place for me has been justified. Sometimes it’s been a struggle, but that’s normal for everyone. You need to fight for the life you want.
I’m not giving up on the idea of finding great romance. Everything that I’ve been through in my relationships has actually left me more independent and more self-assured. And, with a great sense of humour! Despite everything, I’m a romantic.
