The Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) – actors and members of the Writer’s Guild of America (WGA) are striking against the AMPTP (Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers).
But why are Hollywood actors and writers striking?
The main reason for the strike is the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology and changes to the streaming model. Hollywood extras are concerned that they will soon be replaced by their AI counterparts, in the form of clones and other AI programmes, as AI technology continues to advance at a rapid speed.

The new streaming model in the process of production, could mean that actors get paid less, their residual payments get cut and their employment protections are removed.
This fight is not a new one, with Hollywood workers saying that it has been a conversation between them and executives for more than a year now.
This is the first protest action of its kind in 63 years.
Fran Drescher, also known for her role in the popular sitcom, The Nanny, is the screenwriter guild’s president. Drescher said in a statement: “SAG-AFTRA negotiated in good faith and was eager to reach a deal that sufficiently addressed performer needs, but the AMPTP’s responses to the union’s most important proposals have been insulting and disrespectful of our massive contributions to this industry. The companies have refused to meaningfully engage on some topics and on others completely stonewalled us.”
Movies and shows affected by the Hollywood strike
- Late night shows – including ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” CBS’ “The Late Show,” and NBC’s “Tonight” and “Late Night” are all participating and repeats will be aired. HBO will also cease live production of “Real Time with Bill Maher” and “Last Week Tonight” with John Oliver. Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” is also being paused.
- Abbott Elementary – writer Brittani Nichols revealed that this strike could ultimately impact the number of episodes they can pen for the upcoming season.
