World Ovarian Cancer Day was on May 8 and in light of such an important illness for women, here are some ovarian cancer facts to help you understand exactly what it is, signs and symptoms to look out for, and screenings to do in order to ensure the health of your ovaries.
What is ovarian cancer?
According to the CANSA (Cancer Association of South Africa), ovarian cancer isn’t a singular diagnosis, instead, it is a blanket term for multiple cancers that are located in the female reproductive area, including the fallopian tubes, and the primary peritoneal cavity.
There are an estimated 30 different types of cancer that are called ovarian cancer.
Symptoms of ovarian cancer

- Abdominal pain or pelvic cramping
- Feeling full quickly or a lack of appetite
- Indigestion
- Nausea
- Feeling the need to urinate more frequently or urgently
- Unexplained exhaustion
- Pain or pressure in the lower back or pelvis
- Bloating and/or constipation
- Abdominal swelling
- Pain while having sex
- Menstrual changes
- Sudden weight loss

Screenings for ovarian cancer
Of all the different types of cancers that exist, ovarian cancer is the most fatal of cancers that exist for females. This is due to the fact that there are no reliable screening tests available.
Every person that has been assigned female at birth is at risk for ovarian cancer.
